As an innkeeper, we help our guests create memorable vacations and many times don’t allow ourselves the luxury of an escape. Lynn and I just returned from an 11 day getaway to Seattle and Vancouver, BC.
Using a condo in Yaletown in Vancouver as our hub, we explored the surrounding areas enjoying a harbor cruise, Theatre under the Stars in Stanley Park, the teacup ferry rides to Granville Island, and a trip to Grouse Mountain with a gondola ride to the top for incredible views.
A highlight of our trip was my first fly fishing adventure on the Pitt River, a glacier fed river. With water temperatures in the 50′s , waders felt great as I landed my first sock-eye salmon within minutes of casting a line.
So, where did you travel this summer? Have you planned a fall getaway to southwest Virginia? The Appalachian mountains and the beauty of the fall colors are just around the corner. Let us help you enjoy the wonders of nature in the next few months. Call now so we can help you relax and create a memorable getaway on the New River! I certainly did!

If you enjoy bread and pizza as much as we do, you’ll want to join Chef Giovanni Guarini for a few hours in the kitchen of our bed and breakfast in Virginia during his Bread and Pizza cooking class.
From time to time we entice Chef Gio away from his post at The Bank Food and Drink so that he may teach a few of our guests how to prepare specific dishes. We always learn something when we do, and we have fun to boot.
Chef Gio cooks at our Virginia B&B
Has your bread ever fallen flat? Do you gaze at light and airy loaves with wonder and envy? Are you tired of the same old pizzas from the same old places? Ready to roll up your sleeves and fling pizza dough skyward? If so, you are ready for cooking class with Chef Gio at our Virginia Bed and Breakfast.
After a couple of hours in the kitchen, stirring, kneading and rolling, you’ll be ready for lunch. You’ll break into hot crusty loaves with Chef Gio, and sample the results of your hard work: pizzas and calzones.
A cooking class is a delightful addition to a Virginia bed and breakfast getaway. It spices up your travel, and provides useful information that you will use again and again at home. Plus, it’s great fun. You just can’t go wrong.

We’re offering a simple way to support our spectacular American wilderness areas through WinterGreen Vacations:
*If you stay with us for two days or more from Jan through March, we will donate 2% of your lodging to The Wilderness Society, who will email you a heartfelt thanks for your support.
It costs you nothing. Like we said. It’s simple.
WinterGreen Vacations™ is a new program developed to help protect our country’s remaining wilderness. We’ve partnered with The Wilderness Society in this initiative because we admire and trust the work they do on all our behalf.
We are one of a few small, independently owned, eco-friendly inns and B&Bs across the country that will be beta testing WinterGreen in 2010. We are all committed to supporting those wild, beautiful areas across our country that we feel embody a good part of our American history and spirit. If WinterGreen is effective, we hope it will become a national program for thousands more in 2011. Just think what we can all accomplish together.
So check our availability, plan a getaway and help the countryside! Please mention the Wilderness Society when you make your reservation!

The Holidays are fast approaching. For many of us, that means lots of hard work. Rewarding work, of course, but extra work nonetheless. It can be downright exhausting sometimes.
Enjoy this view over the holidays
This year, stay well-rested and make yourself happy with a stay at our Blacksburg VA bed and breakfast. Maybe you can steal a few days for a romantic getaway with your spouse while heading to pick up your freshman at Virginia Tech. At the very least, let someone else cook and clean for you while you finish up your holiday projects – just imagine how many rows you can knit if the coffee is made for you.
Or maybe you can tell all the relatives that this year, you’ve decided to have Christmas overlooking the New River. We have room for a good number of your friends and family here at our Blacksburg Virginia Bed and Breakfast, and our large spaces make gatherings a delight. Maybe you’ll start a new family tradition.

Being in the hospitality business, we meet guests each day who are on a getaway, a staycation, a working vacation, a honeymoon, babymoon, or just plain relaxing. So it’s easy to be jealous as you watch a guest read the entire newspaper in one sitting, finish a newly released novel, fall asleep in the afternoon, or enjoy the last chocolate chip cookie in the cookie jar!
I just returned from doing all of that…and it was great! Here’s a few highlights of my trip.
The prior post shared the first few days in Coeur d’Alene for our cooking experience. The rest of my 12 days away in Washington state included time in Issaquah, Whidbey Islands, and Orcas Islands.
My husband is passionate about his dog, Jackson; fly fishing any day of the week, playing golf, good wine and cigars. I’m passionate about cooking, our guests, running our bed and breakfast and more cooking. Do you see the problem? I love to work and he loves to play. Not that he doesn’t love our business but… (more…)

Our prize for winning the Select Registry 2008 Inn-Credible Cook-off was a trip to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho to the resort overlooking the lake, the site of the 2007 Cook-off and Select Registry meeting.
Eric and I arrived to beautiful spring weather with snow still on the mountain tops but lots of motor boats and sail boats in the marina. This photo was my view each morning as I awoke.
