Art Lovers Getaway

Need a getaway after being stuck at home in 2020? Ring in the New Year with a visit to southwest Virginia and immerse yourself in the art scene. Enjoy delicious eats with this weekend trip as well. We’ve created a two or three-day weekend itinerary that will take you to the charming towns of Blacksburg, Floyd, and Pearisburg. You’ll even have the option to explore the West Virginia art scene too! Make your next stay at the Inn at Riverbend a reset for your mind and your senses!

Day 1:

Start each day with a gourmet breakfast at the Inn at Riverbend.

Drive 20 minutes from the Inn to get to Stafford Art Glass to take a 1-hour introductory glass-blowing class where you’ll get to make a paperweight. Open to all ages 13+. Wear all cotton clothing and close-toed shoes. In the glass paperweight class, you’ll enjoy a more hands-on experience in safety, color application and basic techniques. All tools, supplies and materials will be provided. The class is normally $85 per person but as an Inn at Riverbend guest you will receive a discount! It is best to do this class first thing on your trip so you can pick up your creation 36 hours later to ensure adequate finishing. Feel free to contact us to help with class booking, 24 hours advance notice is required. You can find more information and other class types here.

After the class drive into Blacksburg (another 10 minutes on 460 West) to Matrix Gallery (open 10:30AM-5PM) to look and shop for pottery, glass, jewelry, wood, leather products and more.

Across the street you’ll find another art gallery, Pannonia Art Gallery (open 11AM-7PM weekdays, 11AM-5PM weekends) where you can see more prints and paintings.

We recommend you explore downtown Blacksburg and stop in more shops such as the New River Art & Fiber (open 10AM-6PM Mon-Sat) shop on the corner. Main street has lots of unique stores and restaurants. You can check out more information about the town of Blacksburg here.

After exploring downtown head into a quiet neighborhood to go to Miller off Main St. Galleries (open 10AM-5PM) to see local and international fine arts.

You can enjoy lunch in Blacksburg, or you can head back towards the Inn at Riverbend and stop for lunch at Harvest Restaurant at Mountain Lake Lodge (lunch 11:30AM-2PM), which is where they filmed the movie Dirty Dancing!

Still ample time to enjoy an afternoon nap, go for a hike, or just relax, enjoying the view outside your door.

Another option is to venture out to Beliveau Farm Winery (open from 12-6PM Weds-Sun) for an early dinner, about a 40-minute drive from the Inn. Enjoy the outdoor/indoor eatery and beer garden featuring their famous “Vineyard Pizza” and some amazing appetizers. Definitely worth the drive!

Day 2:

Another delicious breakfast at the Inn at Riverbend.

Take a scenic drive to Floyd, VA (1 hour, 15 minutes) with your first stop at The Maggie Gallery (open 10AM-5PM) to shop and peruse for art and gifts at the gallery in this charming house. Have a print or photo you want custom framed? Bring it along to The Maggie Gallery to their custom framing shop.

Right down the street you can stop by the Floyd Center for the Arts (open 10AM-5PM) to take an art class or just to shop. See their website here for a class schedule for 2021.

Enjoy downtown Floyd and dine at Floyd Country Store (open 11AM-7PM) for a tasty lunch!

Also, on the same street make your last stop at Troika Contemporary Crafts (open 10AM-4PM) where you can view and shop for art and jewelry.

Drive about 20 minutes from downtown to Villa Appalaccia Winery & Vineyard (open 11AM-5PM) and taste their “Italian-inspired” Virginia wines and charcuterie small plates.

Journey back to the Inn at Riverbend and stop for dinner at The Palisades Restaurant (open Weds-Sun 4PM-9PM) in Eggleston, VA. Feel free to contact us to help with a reservation or purchase a gift card for a special occasion.

Day 3:

Another tasty breakfast at the Inn at Riverbend.

If you have time for a third day of excursions or you are on your way back home you can take a drive to Beckley, West Virginia, a little over 1 hour away. Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia (open 10AM-6PM Tues-Sun) is worth the extra miles! There you’ll find glass, carvings and fine artwork for sale at this vast cultural center. There is a deli, grill and bakery as dining options during your visit. Enjoy the gourmet cuisine prepared by professionally trained chefs!

Another wonderful dinner option is The Bad Apple at Doe Creek Farm (open 4:30-9:30PM Thurs-Sat, closed Sun), a prohibition-era establishment with exquisite food and properly crafted cocktails.

——————————————————————————————————————————-

All recommendations here would fit well with a Thursday-Sunday getaway. Most galleries and restaurants recommended are closed earlier in the week but open Thursday to Sunday.

All shops and restaurants recommended are verified as open and operating at this time. Make sure to check their respective websites for COVID-19 guidelines and special accommodations.

While this itinerary is focused on the art scene in southwest Virginia, there is much more to explore in the New River Valley! We hope you can make it out and enjoy a “home away from home” here at the Inn at Riverbend and a safe trip in 2021!
