CASCADES FALLS — FOR EVERY SEASON
Our guests at the Inn at Riverbend usually have a plan of action for their visit to Giles County. Some may choose to do water activities, others explore the wineries, but almost everyone includes a hike to Cascade Falls. There is no doubt Cascade Falls is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Virginia. In fact, CNN Travel recently name it to their Top 10 Spectacular Waterfalls Across the Country.
Cascades Day Use Area is one of our most popular recreational spots. It features several shady picturesque picnic spots, secluded native trout streams and the 4-mile scenic trail loop. Little Stony Creek’s streams “cascade” down 69 feet, while others take a steep drop from the rocky ledge into the pool below, giving this famous falls its name. This is a prime example of nature in action. The main attraction, of course, is the dramatic waterfall located 2-miles from the parking lot.
There are two trails to the Falls, each having distinct qualities which make the journey enjoyable for everyone. The lower trail is more scenic and has been designated a “National Recreational Trail” traversing along Little Stony Creek. Sections of this beautiful trail are carved directly into existing rock. The upper trail is an easier walk as it climbs steadily through the forest above the creek. Many of our guests take the lower trail up and return by the upper trail.
Waterfalls are awesome any time, but during the fall season they show off with reflections of orange and red. Fall leaf peepers visitors, you are definitely in for a treat as you traverse to Cascade Falls and see the fiery colors reflecting in the pool as the water cascades down.
During the winter, ice formations hang from the surrounding 200 foot cliff wall. The scene is breathtaking as the frozen falls combine beauty and power. Visitors can get up close with the wooden stairs and platform for viewing and gives photographers amazing angles for their pictures.
As winter melts away the spring foliage is quick to appear. The rugged rock formations along the trail delight hikers with delicate flowers. Don’t be surprised to find Virginia sweetspire, witch hazel, viburnums and dogwoods popping up through the leaves. These are the sights which make your brisk hike even more delightful.
In the summer, you’re likely to sweat a little as you hike to the Cascade waterfalls, but they deliver a cool refuge and a powerful reminder of nature’s force. The reward is a refreshing dip in the water below the falls.
Don’t forget to bring $3 cash for the parking fee. We encourage our guests to leave shortly after enjoying our gourmet breakfast because the 81-spot parking area fills up quickly!
Whatever season you are visiting the Inn at Riverbend, the Cascades Falls is sure to impress you!
